About
On your High Desert getaway, combine a one-of-a-kind trip to Pioneertown with a hearty meal and live concert at Pappy & Harriet's. This famous roadhouse features a colorful past, open-fire mesquite barbecues, and a laid-back desert atmosphere.
Our story of this iconic restaurant goes back to the heyday of Hollywood Westerns. In 1946, Hollywood insiders Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and others built Pioneertown. Not only did it resemble the Old West with dirt roads, wooden saloons, stables, and jails, but it was also a thriving town. Actors and film crews would stay on location, enjoying restaurants, shopping, and activities like bowling.
When Western movies were no longer popular, Pioneertown evolved into a tourist attraction. Cue Francis Aleba and her husband, John, who bought the building in 1972, turning it into The Cantina, an outlaw biker bar serving burritos and cold beer.
After ten years, Francis handed it to her daughter, Harriet who rebranded the restaurant with her husband, Claude "Pappy" Allen. In 1982, it reopened as "Pappy & Harriet's Pioneertown Palace featuring homestyle cooking, live music, and warm hospitality. After Pappy passed away in 1994, visitors journeyed to honor his legacy, turning the venue into a legendary destination.
In 2003, Robyn Celia and Linda Krantz revitalized and transformed it into one of Southern California's must-visit music spots for nearly 20 years.
Since 2021, new owners have continued the tradition, keeping Pappy & Harriet's a cherished destination. Discover for yourself why visiting makes unforgettable experiences!
Vibe
The outside is a reminder of the building's use in 1950s Westerns: weathered wood, a straightforward sign, and a low-key, rustic style that fits right in alongside the rest of Pioneertown. One can almost imagine bygone actors dressed as cowboys throwing open the doors for a meal.
Inside, wood paneling covers every wall, with vintage beer signs and faded dollar bills tucked into the ceiling and corners. Warm, low lighting creates a cozy space that makes it easy to settle in and strike up conversations.
The live music is as appealing as the vibe, with indoor shows and an outdoor stage for larger acts.
There's a spot for every dining occasion. Pull up a stool at the long bar, settle into a table in the main dining room, or head outside to the patio for a meal under the open sky.
With its blend of rustic charm, quirky decor, and buzzing energy, Pappy & Harriet's brings something special to any California getaway.
Pappy & Harriet's: Menu & Drinks
The menu showcases Santa Maria-style barbecue and all-American comfort classics.
A prime example is the Tri-Tip Platter that comes with two sides. The 10-oz tri-tips are grilled over mesquite for a juicy, tender, smoky, and savory crust. Combine that with classics with sides like fries, coleslaw, baked beans, garlic mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, or seasonal veggies, and you have an authentic Western barbecue dinner!
Other open-pit grill options range from bone-in pork chops, salmon, steaks, and free-range whole chicken.
The bison and brisket burgers are winners, as are the catfish sandwich, assorted dogs, and Pioneer Deluxe Chicken Sandwich.
When you're famished, consider the Cowboy Combo, featuring two of the following: half chicken, half rack of baby back ribs, or Angus tri-tips.
While there isn't a kids' menu, the Family Platters make dining affordable and delicious. This stick-to-your-ribs feast features a full rack of ribs, half chicken, and tri-tips. Also included are fries, coleslaw, baked beans, and mac & cheese, making it the perfect meal after a family hike at Joshua Tree National Park.
The bar menu pairs perfectly with the food, offering specialty cocktails, as well as a variety of beers and wines. A creative libation is the Coyote Moon, showcasing Bombay Sapphire gin, fresh lime juice, ginger beer, and lime garnish.
Combine the Old West vibe of Pioneertown with a hearty meal at Pappy & Harriet's. With an open-pit grill, live music, and a storied past, it will make your High Desert vacation come alive!
