About

The Taos Valley has been home to the Taos Pueblo people for thousands of years, whose native language is Tiwa. Far from being a relic of the past, Taos Pueblo Heritage Center remains the living, breathing home of a vibrant local community. Taos Pueblo isn’t a recreated “historic Native American village” or a museum set piece. It is one of the oldest living and continuously inhabited communities in the country.

Early structures at Taos Pueblo are estimated to date back to between 1000 and 1450 A.D., prior to the arrival of Spanish explorers in the mid-16th century. These traditional multi-story adobe homes have stood through generations.

The Pueblo is also recognized as a National Historic Landmark (designated in 1960) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site (since 1992), which speaks to its cultural and historical importance well beyond Northern New Mexico. Traditional homes at Taos Pueblo have been maintained in their original state, and the Pueblo has chosen to open both their homes and culture to the public “to educate and inform the world” about their home and history.

While approximately 75 to 100 tribal members occupy homes in the original adobe structure, more than 2,000 Taos Pueblo members live on the broader tribal lands and in surrounding areas. Taos Pueblo land extends over 99,000 acres, with the central village sitting at an elevation of 7,200 feet.

Taos Pueblo: Fun Facts & Cool Features

The iconic multi-storied adobe buildings of Taos Pueblo Heritage Center are made in a traditional style and have been maintained in their original state for centuries, giving the place a timeless, grounded feel. Taos Pueblo is a living Native American community, not just a site to tour, so you’re stepping into a real home with real daily life.

The northernmost of the 19 New Mexico Pueblos, Taos Pueblo is a sovereign nation within the U.S. that holds fast to its ancient traditions. Located approximately 10 minutes north of the Taos Plaza. Along with the Plaza, Taos Pueblo once served as the northern point of the Historic Camino Real de Tierra Adentro (the King’s Highway) stretching from Mexico City.

Today, in a conscientious effort to inform and educate others about Taos Pueblo and its people, the village is generally open to day visitors though can remain closed during certain religious activities or other community events.

Guided tours are available year round, and they’re led to help visitors learn about the Pueblo “from our voice,” which makes the experience far more meaningful than reading a plaque. The Pueblo hosts community events and ceremonies, and when timing works out, seeing one can be a once-in-a-lifetime kind of memory.

If you’re in Taos, visiting Taos Pueblo Heritage Center is worth it because it’s one of the rare experiences that feels both educational and deeply personal, like you’ve been trusted with a glimpse of something enduring.
